Holy Damn, Did Justin Timberlake Out-Country the Country Music Association Awards? Photographs by Getty Images 2015 Taylor Hill
During last night's 49th Annual Country Music Association Awards, we saw quite a few gimmicky get-ups grace the Nashville stage. William Shatner stormed in as one of the Imperial's troopers (talk about galaxies colliding), and the University of Georgia's Hairy Dawg shredded on air guitar (2:10) alongside dozens of fully outfitted NCAA mascots roboting, dougieing, swag-surfing, stinky-legging, and whipping and nae-naeing throughout Brad Paisley's "Country Nation." But you know who was the most welcomely understated presence at "Country's Biggest Night?"
Prince of Pop Justin Timberlake. While the man's always on, last night's duet with CMA's New Artist of the Year winner Chris Stapleton, felt startlingly less put-on. Here's last night's smooth mix of Stapleton's "Tennessee Whiskey" and Timberlake's "Drink You Away":
"Can I put a little Memphis up in here?" Timberlake asks in the transition between songs. By the end, everyone is joining him in a "Lawd have mercy!" Keith Urban has recorded the whole thing on his iPhone (3:55), and Jessica Biel (6:59) is all, "I get to take that home. I get to take that home."
Here's hoping for a cross-over album, or at least a super bluesy remake of "SexyBack." If anybody can pull it off, it's this guy.
